Newsstand: Notre Dame baseball bounces back with midweek series win at Winthrop

Notre Dame had a rough first ACC series of the season at Wake Forest. Last weekend, the Fighting Irish were shelled by the Demon Deacons in a three-game sweep. Wake Forest scored 36 runs to Notre Dame’s 11. The Irish were run-ruled twice, once in seven innings and in eight innings in the series finale.
They got right this week in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Irish beat Winthrop 6-3 on Tuesday and 12-3 on Wednesday to improve their overall record this season to 10-4. Head coach Shawn Stiffler’s team only needed three pitchers to get through Tuesday’s game, and the Irish scored half a dozen runs on as many hits in an efficient day at the plate.
Wednesday, the Irish also had as many hits as runs — a dozen. Stiffler put eight arms on the mound since the game got out of hand early; it was 6-0 in the third and 11-0 by the middle of the sixth.
The Irish will stay in South Carolina to face Clemson in a weekend series starting Friday. The Tigers are off to a 17-1 blistering start to the season. They haven’t lost since suffering a defeat to Ole Miss in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 16. That streak of 15 wins in a row includes a three-game sweep of South Carolina in games played in Clemson, Greenville and Columbia.
Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. Saturday’s gets going at 3 p.m. ET, and Sunday’s series finale starts at noon ET. All games can be seen on ACCNX.

Fighting Irish quote of the day
“We have to be a little bit different than everybody else in college basketball in how we go about things. The university that we represent says a lot about these guys when they finish. You get a chance to put this Notre Dame jersey on. You go through the grind academically of what they go through, and when you finish, like, it means something.”
