College World Series: Game time set for Notre Dame baseball vs. Texas
Notre Dame knows when it will play in a College World Series game for the first time in 20 years. The Fighting Irish’s game time vs. Texas was released Monday evening.
The Irish (40-15) and No. 9 Longhorns (47-20) will meet on the field at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., at 7 p.m. ET this Friday, June 17.

Notre Dame advanced to its third ever College World Series by winning the Statesboro Regional final over Texas Tech and beating No. 1 Tennessee two games to one in the Knoxville Super Regional. Texas triumphed at home in the Austin Regional over Air Force then took two of three against No. 8 East Carolina in the Greenville Super Regional.
In a way, both teams improbably punched their tickets.
The Irish had to take down the best team in baseball on the road at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, a place where the the hard-hitting Vols hadn’t lost two of three games all season. Notre Dame jumped on Tennessee early in Game 1 and held on to win 8-6. The Vols struck back in Game 2 with a 12-4 victory, but the Irish rallied late in Game 3 and won 7-3.
Texas lost Game 1 to East Carolina, 13-7. Winners of Game 1 of a Super Regional make it to Omaha 80% of the time. In Game 2, the Pirates had the Longhorns on the ropes in the seventh inning. East Carolina led 7-2, but Texas scored seven runs in the final three innings to win 9-8 on a walk-off. The Longhorns dominated in Game 3, 11-1.

Friday’s matchup will likely pit Notre Dame ace John Michael Bertrand (9-3, 2.69) against Texas hurler Pete Hansen (11-2, 3.40). Both were roughed up in the Super Regional round. Bertrand allowed six earns runs on eight hits against Tennessee. Hansen gave up five earned runs on seven hits against East Carolina. Neither No. 1 pitcher made it through the fifth inning.
Notre Dame and Texas have played six times in the programs’ histories. The all-time series is tied 3-3. Notre Dame won in 1957, 1989 and 1991. Texas won in 1969, 1990 and 1995. Four of the six games (1969, 1989, 1990, 1991) were played in Austin, one (1957) in Omaha and the latest (1995) in Fullerton, Calif.
No team has been to the College World Series more than Texas. The Longhorns are making their 38th CWS appearance this year. They have won six national championships, tied for second all-time. Notre Dame is seeking its first ever CWS title.
The winner of Friday’s game will play the winner of No. 5 Texas A&M and Oklahoma at 6 p.m. ET Sunday. The loser plays the loser between the Aggies and Sooners at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The CWS runs on a double-elimination format. All eight teams are guaranteed to play at least two games.
