Between his first and second seasons with the Irish, Notre Dame head men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry will make his coaching debut in international competition. Shrewsberry was named an assistant coach for the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team on Friday, and he’ll help lead the team in the FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup this summer.

The AmeriCup, which is a tournament between national teams from North, Central and South America, has yet to announce dates and locations for this year’s event.

Shrewsberry will join Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd, who will serve as the head coach for the U18 National Team in 2024. He’ll coach alongside Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland, who will be the other assistant. While Shrewsberry has never served on a coaching staff for Team USA, he was a court coach for the 2023 U19 National Team.

Team USA will look to defend another AmeriCup gold medal, having won six straight and 10 overall. The competition takes place every two years.

Shrewsberry’s coaching resume includes two seasons at Penn State, going 14-17 (7-13 Big Ten) in the first one and making the NCAA Tournament with a 23-14 (10-10) record in the second. He accepted the head coaching job at Notre Dame this past March, leaving State College, Penn. for his home state of Indiana.

In his first season with the Irish, Shrewsberry is 7-15 (2-9 Atlantic Coast Conference), which includes an ongoing streak of six-straight losses. Notre Dame is tied for last place in the ACC with Louisville, who also sits at 7-15 (2-9).

Prior to his two Division-I head coaching jobs, Shrewsberry made two stops assistant at Purdue under head coach Matt Painter. He served as an assistant for the Boston Celtics from 2013-19 under then-head coach Brad Stevens, with whom he also worked as an assistant from 2007-11 at Butler. Shrewsberry made back-to-back National Championships with the Bulldogs, as well as back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals appearances with the Celtics.

Shrewsberry was also the head coach at Indiana University South Bend, an NAIA school. He went 3-28 in his first season but improved the Titans to 17-15 by Year 3.

Over his years of coaching many successful teams, Shrewsberry built up a reputation among his peers. Without exception, well-respected opposing head coaches like Providence’s Ed Cooley, Duke’s Jon Scheyer and Miami’s Jim Larrañaga have praised Notre Dame’s first-year leader after games against the Irish. That respect in the coaching world earned him a spot on the USA U18 National Team staff.
