Fighting Irish legacy Bryce Young officially signs with Notre Dame
Marcus Freeman just added a player to its roster with some serious Notre Dame lineage.
Charlotte (N.C.) Christian’s Bryce Young signed with the Fighting Irish on National Signing Day, and he is none other than the son of Bryant Young, a former Notre Dame pass rusher himself and NFL Hall of Famer.
The elder Young capped off his Irish career with a first-team All-America selection in his final season. He then went on to play in the NFL for 14 years with the San Francisco 49ers en route to being inducted into the 2022 Pro Football Hall of Fame. And that’s an extremely abbreviated recap of Bryant Young’s playing days.
Young, who ranks as the nation’s No. 84 player and No. 8 EDGE according to the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, committed to Notre Dame on April 29 over a long list of schools, including Tennessee, Michigan, USC, Stanford, Miami, Penn State, Wisconsin and many others.
Notre Dame became the first school to offer Young after the staff worked him out at a prospect camp in June 2022. His recruiting process remained steady throughout the fall but blew up this calendar year, earning many dozens of offers.
The Irish offering Young first gave them an early leg up for him.
“Yeah that was pretty cool — knowing that they had trust in me before I had the [junior] tape,” Young previously told Blue & Gold. “They believed in me so much.”

The elder Young may have preferred that his son play at Notre Dame, but he never pressured him to follow in his footsteps.
“This is my decision,” Young said after his commitment. “He didn’t push me at all. It’s the place I feel I’ll succeed the best at.”
On3’s own rankings list Young as the No. 50 prospect and No. 6 EDGE in America. He’s been a constant riser in the rankings per On3 and other websites, and his stock could continue to rise as he’s playing in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio in early January.
“Young has a ton of upside,” On3 rankings director Charles Power recently said about Young. “He was a little bit of a late bloomer physically, and he’s really blossomed over the last calendar year. Young had a really good senior season and wins off his pure physical ability right now. He’s strong, fast and powerful and can win with a bull rush.”
Young will enroll at Notre Dame in January to begin his Fighting Irish career.
