After one year working at Alabama as offensive coordinator, it looks as if former Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees is on the move again.

First reported by Zac Jackson of The Athletic and confirmed by other outlets, the Cleveland Browns are “working to hire” Rees as its tight ends coach.

“He’ll have a role in the overall development of the pass game,” Jackson’s initial report stated. “His exact title is uncertain and the hire is not yet official.”

Prior to his one-year stint at Alabama, Rees worked for his alma mater for several seasons. He was the Fighting Irish quarterbacks coach from 2017-19, was elevated to offensive coordinator for the 2020 season and held the position for three seasons. The 31-year-old coach played for Notre Dame from 2010-13.

Rees will be replacing T.C. McCartney, who was fired by Cleveland following the AFC Divisional Round loss to the Houston Texans. McCartney previously held the position for the last two seasons.

It will be Rees’ first time coaching tight ends. He’s only worked with quarterbacks to this point.

Quote of the day

“Coach Freeman and I have a great relationship. We’ve been able to spend a lot of time together. My relationship with Coach Rudolph is really strong. He’s visited my school a handful of times. We’ve had so many sit-down meetings, watching film and talking about life.

“Another big thing is that I know Coach Rudolph, and he knows my family. My family knows his family, like his wife. His wife is on visits. We’ve grown our relationship outside of football.”
