Newsstand: Notre Dame CB Benjamin Morrison speaks out about season-ending injury
Notre Dame football junior Benjamin Morrison has spoken out for the first time since coach Marcus Freeman revealed on Monday that his star cornerback would be out for the season due to a hip injury. On Wednesday, Morrison shared a statement on Instagram, addressing the difficulty behind being unable to suit up for the Fighting Irish’s potential path to the College Football Playoff.
“I won’t lie—I’m heartbroken that my season was cut short due to injury,” Morrison said. “There’s nothing like being on the field with my brothers, and nothing will fill that void. But I’m trusting God and His plans for my life. Everything He’s placed in my heart, I believe, He will bring to pass. My faith is going to be strengthened through this so I’ll keep holding on to His promises.
“Injuries might be part of the game but they’re never part of the plan. I know God is faithful, and even though I may change, He never will. “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” – Genesis 21:6. I believe that I am going to look back, and this situation will bring me joy.”
On Thursday, Freeman revealed Morrison is “recovering from surgery.” When he returns to campus, Notre Dame’s third-year head coach expects Morrison to resume his role as a team captain.
“When he gets back — he’s eager to get back here,” Freeman said. “Once he’s able to get back around our guys, his leadership skills will continue to show. Right now, he’s just taking care of his body and recovering from surgery. We wish him all the best, and he’ll be back before we know it.”
Morrison started all six games for Notre Dame this season and had 20 tackles and 4 pass breakups. He played 47 snaps in last Saturday’s 49-7 victory over Stanford.
