Former Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn discusses where program stands in NIL
In a recent interview with ESPN analyst Greg McElroy, former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn said the Irish have “plenty of NIL money to build a roster.”
Quinn joined McElroy on Monday’s episode of Always College Football to discuss Notre Dame’s run in the College Football Playoff and the program’s future. During the episode, McElroy asked Quinn how the Irish have been able to carve out a place for themselves in the current era of college football.
Quinn told McElroy that he intimately knows how much money Notre Dame “has raised for NIL, what has been spent and what they have.” Though he did not reveal the number, on Dec. 21, Sportico obtained a tax return copy of Quinn’s NIL collective, Friends of University of Notre Dame (FUND). The report said that FUND generated over $20.5 million in revenue last year.
According to Quinn, the Irish have been “highly competitive with whatever else is out there” with “certain positions and players” who have joined the program. Last offseason, Notre Dame acquired former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard, whose On3 NIL Valuation is $1.6 million.
On3’s NIL Valuation is the leading index in the industry that determines the projected annual value (PAV) of college and high school athletes by combining Roster Value and NIL Value.
Leonard headlined a 2024 transfer portal class that included defensive lineman RJ Oben, wide receivers Beaux Collins, Jayden Harrison and Kris Mitchell, kicker Mitch Jeter and defensive backs Rod Heard II and Jordan Clark.
In addition to last year’s transfer portal class, Quinn also commended the Irish for how they have added to the 2025 roster this offseason.

Notre Dame has added eight players from the transfer portal for next season: Virginia wide receiver Malachi Fields, Alabama defensive back Devonta Smith, Wisconsin WR Will Pauling, Louisville defensive lineman Jared Dawson, Virginia Tech safety Jalen Stroman, Southern Cal DL Elijah Hughes, Arkansas tight end Ty Washington and North Carolina kicker Noah Brunette.
“The transfer portal, and NIL, because they’re coupled together, has allowed Notre Dame to be able to add depth and add spots in positions where they feel like they’re a point of weakness,” Quinn said. “To be able to be more of a complete team at this point.”
On Monday, Notre Dame will face Ohio State, who reportedly spent $20 million on its roster. Quinn credited some of his ‘friends’ for going above and beyond to ensure Notre Dame is in a spot where it can construct a team to compete for a national championship.
“NIL has been good to Notre Dame,” he said. “There’s a lot of people who stepped up at a time — Notre Dame tends to be more conservative. They don’t want to be a first mover in some of these things out there that are new and different.
“I would say this: there’s a lot of people who stepped up and supported the program.”
