Newsstand: BCS formula predicts where Notre Dame will fall in new CFP ranking
On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff committee will reveal its new top 25 rankings through an ESPN telecast. Notre Dame ranked as the No. 6 team in the land last week, which was good for the No. 8 seed in the CFP.
But with Indiana — the No. 5 team and No. 6 seed in last week’s update — falling to Ohio State last week, one should expect Notre Dame to move up. It’s a safe bet that they’ll move up to the No. 7 spot, but could they go to No. 6 — jumping Penn State?
The Nittany Lions didn’t look great on the road against Minnesota Saturday, winning 26-25, but it would be a surprise if the Irish move past James Franklin’s team.
The 12-team format will take place for the first time in the sport’s history in 2024, replacing the four-team model, but many of the points of contention have remained. More teams in the CFP have certainly added intrigue this late in the season, but there’s still an old-school way of looking at the rankings, with the BCS formula still being used on social media.
With that in mind, the BCS’s latest Top 25 was revealed on Monday, giving us some insight at how these teams would rank and slot into the College Football Playoff if it was still used today. Here’s the way the BCS-style formula would have the rankings look after Week 13.

The BCS ranking has Notre Dame moving to No. 5 in the rankings, good for the No. 7 seed. In this projection, the Irish would face the No. 10 seeded Tennessee Volunteers.
Notre Dame tweets of the day
Quote of the day
“I remember as a player there, played there in 2008, and it was rocking, man. Celebrities. The crowd. It was big-time. The lights, man, it was the lights. And they beat us up pretty well. I think back to two years ago, I think we were on a five-game win streak, we had won five in a row. We had a lot of hopes, if we win this game, what bowl game we were going to. And they obviously crushed those hopes. Yeah, they were good. They had playmakers. They had a great team. They beat us.
“You guys hear me talk about ‘keep the pain.’ That’s one that sticks with me for a long time. It’s one I’m going to make sure the guys in this program understand because I don’t care if you were here or not, there are certain expectations when you’re in a relationship. And we’re all in a relationship together. The pain that I felt as the head coach leaving there in 2022, they’re all going to understand no matter if they were here or not. So, it’s a challenge.”
