Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin was holding out of the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp, but news broke on Monday afternoon that he reached an agreement on a “reworked deal” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“The new deal will pay him north of $18 million in each of the next two years,” Schefter reported in his breaking news tweet. “Martin was scheduled to be at $13.5 million this year and $14 million next year, so it’s an additional $8.5+ million. Both years also have been fully guaranteed, per source.”

Back in 2018, Martin signed a six-year, $84 million extension, but as time went on, he was passed up by other offensive guards in annual salary. It is believed that his new deal makes him the third-highest paid guard in the NFL.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), the best two guards in the league are Martin and Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts, both of whom played for the Fighting Irish before outstanding NFL careers. The success of both players collegiately and in the NFL is why Notre Dame has such a strong claim to the title of Offensive Line U.

Martin is the league’s best guard per PFF.

“Martin’s 72.8 PFF grade last season ranked ninth among guards, but in every other season of his career he finished with a top-five grade at the position,” wrote PFF’s Gordon McGuinness in late May. “He was the only guard in the NFL to not allow any sacks while playing 700 or more pass-blocking snaps, and, on balance, it’s hard to see him not being one of the best guards in football in 2023.”
