Notre Dame football adds veteran coach to defensive staff

The Notre Dame football program has added veteran coach Andy Buh (pronounced boo) as a defensive senior analyst, as reflected on the Fighting Irish athletics website’s staff directory page.
Buh arrives in South Bend with over 25 years of coaching experience, most recently serving as a defensive analyst at Purdue in 2024.
Buh comes to campus with a key connection to the Notre Dame football coaching staff. He served under new Irish defensive coordinator Chris Ash at Rutgers in 2019. Buh was Ash’s defensive coordinator in his final season as head coach of the Scarlet Knights. They also worked together in Wisconsin in 2012. Ash was the Badgers’ defensive coordinator, and Buh was the linebackers coach that season.
When Buh was at Rutgers, Ash only lasted four games in 2019 before the administration relieved him of his duties. The Knights finished 98th in total defense (433.6 yards per game) and 123rd in scoring (36.7 points per game) and with a 2-10 record. Current Syracuse quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile was Rutgers’ interim head coach.
In addition to his time at Rutgers, Buh was the defensive coordinator at Maryland from 2016-18, California in 2013 and Nevada in 2010-11. He also served as the co-defensive coordinator at Stanford from 2008-09. Buh has primarily coached linebackers during his career, though he tutored the safeties while at Maryland.

Buh’s best statistical season as defensive coordinator was his first in 2010 with Nevada. The Wolfpack were 31st in scoring (21.4 points per game) and 54th in total defense (363.6 yards per game). Buh’s defenses mostly finished in the bottom half nationally during his stints at Cal and Maryland; the Terps were 62nd of 130 teams in total defense in 2018.
Buh graduated from Nevada in 1995 and has also coached at San Diego State (linebackers 2002-05), Fresno State (graduate assistant 2006), Kentucky (outside linebackers 2015), Arizona (outside linebackers 2020) and Illinois (linebackers 2021-23).
He is the fifth coach to join Marcus Freeman’s staff this offseason. Freeman also hired Ash as his defensive coordinator, Ja’Juan Seider (Penn State) to coach running backs, Dominic Spalding (Northwestern) as an offensive analyst and Jevaughn Codlin (West Virginia) as a defensive analyst.
The Irish also welcome back Trent Miles and Harris Bivin as senior offensive analysts, Casey McHugh as a senior defensive analyst and Jesse Schmitt as a senior special teams analyst. Spalding, Kurt Rawlings and Rob Delaney are offensive analysts, while Codlin, Zack May and Nick Sebastian are defensive analysts. Former Notre Dame long snapper Michael Vinson is a special teams fellow.
