College football commentator Joe Klatt has revealed his top 50 NFL Draft prospects. And former Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer checked in at No. 15.
“Notre Dame had some real offensive issues because of quarterback injuries,” Klatt said. “But Mayer was the focal point of what the defense was trying to stop, and he still produced.
“He’s a great leader and he’s the kind of guy you want in your locker room. He catches the ball really well, and he’s a fluid player. He’s a good blocker at the point of attack, and he can flex out and run routes.”
Klatt also ranked the 6-foot-4 ½, 249-pound Mayer as his No. 1 tight end prospect. He is ahead of former Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid, who slotted at No. 16.
After a terrific Notre Dame career, Mayer declared for the NFL Draft in December. He finished his three-year campaign catching 180 passes for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns. Those marks rank atop the Irish record books among tight end statistics.
Mayer was named a consensus All-American after a 12-game season with 67 receptions, 809 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022.
Mayer is looking to become the first former Irish tight end drafted in the first round since the Bengals selected Tyler Eifert, No. 21 overall, in 2013.
Since then, Notre Dame has had six other tight ends drafted: Troy Niklas, Ben Koyack, Durham Smythe, Alize Mack, Cole Kmet and Tommy Tremble.

Notre Dame Quote of the Day
“He’s just that one little brother you always had. Christian, he’s a funny guy. He’s also a great player. So, it’s just awesome to have a guy like that. I see a lot of myself in him. So it’s cool being able to just walk him through things that I had to go through last year.
“I didn’t really realize it here, but it’s the same transition. When you get on campus, there is going to be things that you don’t know what to do or understand. So having a person to go to is awesome.”
