Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman announces injury to OL Guerby Lambert

One of Notre Dame football’s most promising young offensive linemen will spend the remainder of spring practice on the sideline.
On Saturday, coach Marcus Freeman announced during his news conference that sophomore Guerby Lambert had shoulder surgery to repair his labrum. He is out for the remainder of the spring and is not expected back until the fall.
Before the injury, Lambert saw time at left and right tackle. It was his first time participating in spring practice since he did not enroll for his freshman season until June. Still, he made enough strides before the 2024 season to see some snaps and showcase his potential.
Lambert played in three regular-season games last season, logging 53 snaps at right tackle and preserving a redshirt year of eligibility in the process. Notre Dame special teams coordinator Marty Biagi also utilized the 6-foot-7, 324-pound Lambert in the College Football Playoff on the field goal/extra point protection units. Those games did not count toward his eligibility.
A product of West Roxbury (Mass.) Catholic Memorial, Lambert signed with the Irish over scholarship offers from Ohio State, Penn State and Georgia. He arrived in South Bend as a four-star recruit who was the No. 42 overall player, No. 4 offensive tackle nationally and No. 1 recruit in Massachusetts in the 2024 class.

Notre Dame football’s offensive line availability this spring is limited
Lambert’s injury is the latest hurdle Notre Dame offensive line coach Joe Rudolph has had to overcome this spring. Before Freeman’s announcement Saturday, the Irish already missed four players who started games last season and another notable reserve.
Sophomore left tackle Anthonie Knapp and senior offensive guard Billy Schrauth have been limited to modified activity due to ankle injuries sustained during the 2024 campaign. Senior right tackle Aamil Wagner is in a similar position. However, his availability this spring is because of the number of snaps he accrued last season. Lastly, senior center Ashton Craig and junior Chris Terek are out for all of spring. Craig’s absence is due to the knee injury he suffered on Sept. 14 in Week 3, while Terek’s was due to lingering right foot and left shoulder AC joint injuries.
Knapp, Schrauth, Wagner, Craig and Terek are all expected to be back to full strength for the start of preseason camp, which typically begins in July. Freeman did not specify when Lambert could return in the fall.
The Irish will have nine scholarship offensive linemen available for next Saturday’s Blue-Gold Game: juniors Sullivan Absher, Devan Houstan, Charles Jagusah and Joe Otting, sophomores Peter Jones and Styles Prescod and freshmen Matty Augustine, Cameron Herron and Owen Stebig.
