After three seasons at Notre Dame, offensive lineman Ty Chan has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Chan did not started a game in his Notre Dame career and played eight snaps on offense in 2024 — six of which came against Navy Oct. 26. He’s been a regular on special teams units and played on the Irish’s field goal team. Chan recorded a tackle against Northern Illinois Sept. 7.

The 6-5, 320-pounder has been behind other players on the Irish offensive line without a path ahead of him to become a starter. Thus, Chan will play his final two seasons of eligibility elsewhere.

Chan ranked as the nation’s No. 269 overall player and No. 18 interior offensive lineman according to the 2022 On3 Industry Ranking. On3’s own rankings weren’t as high on him, listing him as a three-star player and the No. 42 interior offensive lineman in the country.

He committed to the Irish initially over offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Boston College and several others.

Notre Dame has the following offensive lineman on scholarship for the 2025 season: Guerby Lambert, Will Black, Owen Strebig, Matty Augustine, Charles Jagusah, Sullivan Absher, Aamil Wagner, Styles Prescod, Peter Jones, Anthonie Knapp, Chris Terek, Joe Otting, Billy Schrauth, Cameron Herron and Ashton Craig.

None were surprises, but Chan is the fourth Notre Dame offensive lineman to enter the transfer portal since the Irish lost to Ohio State in the national championship.

Sophomore Sam Pendleton entered the portal Wednesday morning; his predicted destination, according to Nakos, is Tennessee. Seniors Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler entered the portal Thursday afternoon and should also attract significant Power 4 interest.

An exodus at a single position group would be a red flag for many programs, but not for Notre Dame’s offensive line. The Irish simply have a logjam up front, with established starters like Wagner, Schrauth, Craig, Knapp and Jagusah all coming back with two or more years of eligibility remaining.

Youngsters such as Lambert, Black and Absher could challenge for starting spots in the near future, too.

Notre Dame offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, navigated a difficult situation in 2024 with little returning experience. He may have an equally difficult time picking a starting five in 2025, but for different reasons.

The Irish are loaded on the offensive line, but the side effect is talented players will look for better opportunities elsewhere.
