Newsstand: A look at Heisman odds for Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman
Yes, it’s very early to be talking about who will be invited to New York for the Heisman trophy ceremony later this year, but at the same time, it’s something that Vegas always has odds for.
And by throwing for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns on 19 of 23 attempts, Irish graduate student quarterback Sam Hartman only helped improved his early odds. If play like this continues and Notre Dame can win on the big stage, Hartman very well could end up on the short list for the sport’s biggest award.
USC’s Caleb Williams was also on display in week zero action. In a 56-28 victory over San Jose State, Williams went 18-of-25 passing for 278 yards and four touchdowns. He’s the leader in FanDuels’s early Heisman odds at +500.
LSU’s Jayden Daniels (+1,000), Texas’ Quinn Ewers (+1,200), Florida State’s Jordan Travis (+1,200), and Clemson’s Cade Clemson (+1,400) are all ahead of Hartman.

Hartman’s odds are currently sixth best per FanDuel at +1,600. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. is tied with Hartman. North Carolina’s Drake Maye (+1,800), Michigan’s JJ McCarthy (+1,800) and Oregon’s Bo Nix (+1,800) trail Hartman and Penix.
In an article published by FanDuel a few weeks ago, Hartman’s odds were significantly lower odds at +3,000.
Notre Dame tweets of the day
Quote of the day
“We could have put in a waiver to use (Sunday) as a practice day, but we decided not to. And we wanted to give them the day off. A lot of those guys did not sleep after the game. So, I think we got back to our hotel a little bit after 12:30 a.m. (Ireland time). And I think the first bus took off at 5:15 in the morning. The second bus was at 5:30 a.m., and the last bus was at 6.
“They probably thought they were gonna be able to sleep on the plane, but to sleep on a plane is not easy. So we decided to give them yesterday off — encourage them not just to sleep all day because we want to try to get their cycles back to where it needs to be and try to stay up. Try to go on a walk and do some different things when you get back. And so I know a lot of them got good sleep last night.”
