The NCAA Transfer Portal is closed for just about everyone besides graduate transfers and all players who play for a program with a head coaching change. Those athletes have a 30-day window after their head coach’s departure. While Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman gears up for his third season, offensive lineman Quinn Murphy used his ability as a graduate to enter the transfer portal on Thursday.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported the news on Thursday. Murphy has one season of collegiate eligibility remaining.

Murphy, a fifth-year player from Duxbury (Mass.) High, is the first Irish player to enter the transfer portal since linebacker Nolan Ziegler put his name into it on Dec. 30. Since the end of the 2023 season, Notre Dame has had 16 players enter it, including Murphy.

During his collegiate career, the 6-foot-5¼, 312-pound Murphy appeared in eight games as a walk-on. He debuted as a sophomore in Notre Dame’s 52-0 victory over South Florida on Sept. 19, 2020.

After his only other appearance in a game was on the field goal unit during Notre Dame’s 45-32 win against North Carolina in 2022, Murphy contributed in six games in 2023. He played in games against Tennessee State, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Stanford and Oregon State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Murphy’s most notable impact came from playing six offensive snaps against the Beavers in his final Irish game. Notre Dame defeated Oregon State 40-8, with 236 rushing yards on 48 carries (4.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. They only surrendered two sacks.

As a recruit, Murphy verbally committed to Princeton. However, he flipped his commitment to Notre Dame in December 2018. He also reportedly had offers from Murphy held offers from Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, Harvard, Holy Cross, UMass, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
