Warner Robins (Ga.) High class of 2024 wide receiver Isiah Canion announced Saturday that he has decommitted from Notre Dame.

“First, I would like to thank Notre Dame for extending me the opportunity to continue the game I love at one of the country’s most stories and tradition rich programs,” Canion tweeted Saturday afternoon. “It is for this reason I do not take lightly the decision I have made concerning my future with Notre Dame.

“After thoughtful consideration with my family, seeking guidance and prayer from my creator and deep reflection on what is truly best for me and my future, it is with clarity that I officially announce my decommitment from the University of Notre Dame. I know this decision will disappoint many; however, this is what is truly best for me at this time.”

It’s surprising news, as Canion had just committed to the Irish at the end of April and had a great official visit in mid-June. This development has caught the Notre Dame staff by surprise as well, from what Blue & Gold was told. On Thursday morning, Blue & Gold saw Canion at a padded practice in the Atlanta area, and he indicated that his Irish commitment was strong.

Notre Dame still has two receiver commitments in the 2024 cycle, coming from Charlotte (N.C.) Christian’s Micah Gilbert and Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South’s Cam Williams.

Gilbert ranks as the No. 220 overall recruit and No. 37 wideout per the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, while Williams is the No. 36 player and No. 10 receiver per the same metric.

Notre Dame will likely look to replace Canion with another receiver prospect.

Canion ranks as the No. 290 overall prospect and No. 49 wide receiver according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
