Former Notre Dame defensive lineman (1990-93) and NFL Hall of Famer Bryant Young was interviewed by NBC in the fourth quarter of the All-American Bowl Jan. 6. He was inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas that day to watch his son, class of 2024 defensive end and Notre Dame signee Bryce Young, play in the prestigious all-star game.

Below is what Young said during the broadcast:

On comparing the recruiting process when he was going through it to modern day:

“Well we certainly didn’t have all of this (the All-American Bowl) — where the recruits get all this type of exposure. Through their hard work, they’re elected to these all-star games. There’s the social media aspect; that wasn’t there. And you get a chance nowadays to really know who these star, up-and-coming high school athletes are. That’s the biggest change from when I was in high school to now.”

On recruits nowadays being bigger and stronger than when he was in high school:

“I’m surely glad I retired when I did because when you look at these players coming out, they’re enormous at 17 or 18 years old. How big can these guys get?”

On Bryce being ranked low before his senior year (by other websites, not On3) and improvements he made:

“Bryce worked extremely hard. I said [to him] from day one that you’re only scratching the surface. As long as you continue to work, do the necessary things and put yourself in a good position to compete and make plays, then it’s going to happen for you. He’s humble and worked hard. I say that good things come to those who wait and work hard.”

On there being another Bryce Young in Charlotte who plays football (Panthers quarterback):

“That’s the offensive Bryce Young. I told Bryce that he has to do his due diligence to overcome the offensive Bryce’s name. It’s remarkable that you have two guys with the same name. Bryce would get tagged on social media of posts [meant for the Panthers’ quarterback]. He’s really excited about his opportunity and overcoming that shadow.”

Bryce Young was a top performer during practice No. 2 of the All-American Bowl

Practicing for the East team, Young was listed as the No. 4 top overall performer from the second practice by On3. Here’s what On3 said about Young from that day:

“Young continued to flash an intriguing skill set on the edge for the East squad at the All-American Bowl. At 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, Young has a big frame that still has room to fill out. During a slower-paced morning session, he caught our eye with his presence off the edge. The Charlotte native had several nice reps during the afternoon practice, showing a good first step and active hands. There’s still areas for Young to improve technically, but he had a very nice showing on Wednesday.”
