Four-star cornerback and Notre Dame commitment Chaston Smith is on the move. He’s transferring from Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School to Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic.

Smith is on his third high school. He started his prep career at Knoxville (Tenn.) Bearden and spent two years there but transferred over to McCallie School on the other side of the Volunteer State for his junior campaign. But for his senior year, Smith is back in Knoxville.

“We had a very talented, young group of secondary kids and so he brings some experience to that,” Knoxville Catholic head coach Philip Shadowens told Knox Knews. “Obviously (he’s) a four-star committed to Notre Dame, so obviously a very talented kid.

“The biggest thing that I know about Chas is he’s such a good kid, high quality kid, great character, hard worker. So it’s all those things that you want a kid to do that’s coming in as a senior. So I think he’ll be someone that our kids can also look at and see how to practice every day.”

He’ll be in the Tennessee Volunteers’ backyard again, but for what it’s worth, Smith originally committed to Notre Dame over Clemson and Texas A&M. The Vols weren’t even among his top schools. To Blue & Gold’s knowledge, Smith has not visited any other schools since picking the Fighting Irish Dec. 1, 2024.

He only played four games before suffering a season-ending injury as a junior. In those outings, he compiled 5 solo tackles, 2 pass breakups and 1 interception. Although his sophomore stats are unavailable, he had 31 tackles, 4 pass breakups and 1 interception as a freshman.

Smith is listed as the nation’s No. 283 overall player and No. 25 cornerback according to the 2026 On3 Industry Ranking.

On3’s own rankings view him similarly as the industry ranking, putting him as the No. 293 overall recruit and No. 28 cornerback in the land.

Quote of the day

“What excites me about Notre Dame is their history of success, especially with tight ends. I am really excited to experience a little bit of what it feels like to be up there with all of the tradition. I am looking forward to getting to spend some time building a relationship with the coaching staff.”
