Hendersonville (Tenn.) Pope John Paul II class of 2023 quarterback Kenny Minchey committed to Pittsburgh April 30 over offers from the likes of Vanderbilt, Michigan State, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia.

Notre Dame offered Minchey July 30 in hopes to flip him from his Panthers’ pledge, but nothing came of that over the summer, and the four-star signal caller seemed locked in with his Pittsburgh commitment.

That changed as the fall went on, though, and Minchey announced his decommitment from Pittsburgh on Monday afternoon, and the Fighting Irish are in heavy pursuit of the 6-1, 205-pounder.

It’s also our understanding that Minchey will officially visit Notre Dame this weekend, which would be his second time in South Bend. He camped for the staff back in June of 2021.

With Minchey back on the market, other programs still in search for a class of 2023 quarterback will surely look to heat things up with him as well.

On Nov. 6, Pittsburgh Sports Now reported that Minchey planned to enroll early with the Panthers, so one could reasonably assume that he’d also get to Notre Dame in January if he is to choose the Irish.

Minchey ranks as the nation’s No. 240 overall player and No. 14 signal-caller according to the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3’s own rankings list Minchey as the No. 259 overall player and No. 16 quarterback in America. He’s the No. 5 prospect from his home state of Tennessee.

In 13 games played in 2021, Minchey completed 215 of 351 passes for 3,280 yards and 32 touchdowns. On the ground, he added 137 yards and three more scores.

He suffered a shoulder injury in early September and missed most the season but was able to return to action Nov. 4 and led his team to a 35-13 playoff victory that night. They lost this past weekend; Minchey’s senior campaign is now completed.

Before his injury, Minchey completed 47 of 64 passes for 768 yards with 11 touchdowns and 1 interception in four games.

Minchey is from the same high school that produced former Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate.

Minchey shined at Elite 11

Minchey was a standout performer at the 2022 Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles at the end of June, according to On3’s Charles Power.

Minchey had a good three days at the Elite 11 Finals,” Power wrote. “He was a Top Performer on day two with one of the better pro day workouts and showed good zip on his throws throughout the week. Minchey has a compact, powerful build and was able to drive the ball out to the boundary and middle of the field with little strain.

“He was solid, but not spectacular in 7-on-7 on Thursday, with On3 charting him on target for 10 of 18 passes with one touchdown, one interception and a sack. The four-star signal caller showed one of the more well-rounded passing skill sets on hand and had a solid week, in our opinion.”
