Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange class of 2025 safety Ivan Taylor has decommitted from Notre Dame and flipped his pledge to Michigan.

Taylor committed to Notre Dame in December 2023 but had been open in his recruiting process the past couple months or so. Taylor has said on a few occasions that the departure of ex-Irish safeties coach Chris O’Leary to the Los Angeles Chargers affected his recruiting process.

The 6-0, 180-pounder is the fourth prospect to decommit from the Irish in the 2025 cycle. Tight end Nate Roberts (Ohio State), wide receiver Shaun Terry (Missouri) and defensive end CJ May (undecided) are the others.

Taylor is one of the best defensive backs in the country, but even with him decommitting, Notre Dame still has one of its very best secondary classes of the past 20 years. This past Friday, the Irish landed a pledge from four-star JaDon Blair out of Winston-Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor to go along with Greenwich (Conn.) Brunswick School’s Ethan Long, who picked the Irish over Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan and others in January.

The cornerback group is strong as well, headlined by four-star recruits Dallas Golden from Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep and Indianapolis Ben Davis’ Mark Zackery. Cree Thomas out of Phoenix Brophy Prep rounds out a strong trio of cornerbacks.

Notre Dame has 21 commitments in the 2025 class following Taylor’s decommitment. According to On3’s own rankings, the Irish have four commits ranked in the national top-100 rankings — offensive tackle Will Black (No. 2), quarterback Deuce Knight (No. 28), safety JaDon Blair (No. 51) and tight end James Flanigan (No. 92).

News broke in early June that Taylor was officially visiting Alabama, which made it public knowledge that Taylor was looking around. He visited the Crimson Tide as well as Notre Dame, Michigan and Florida last month.

“I’m making sure I’m at the right place,” Taylor said following his Notre Dame official visit regarding his recruiting process. “I’m keeping my options open when it comes down to that. I’m taking it slow, taking it day-by-day. At the end of the day, God will lead me to where I need to be.”

Taylor ranks as the nation’s No. 132 overall player and No. 13 safety according to On3’s own rankings.

During his 10-game junior season, Taylor totaled 50 tackles (6 for loss), 1 interception and 3 forced fumbles. He’s recorded 135 tackles and 5 interceptions during his high school career.

He is also the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Ike Taylor. The elder Taylor played in the NFL from 2003-14 and is a two-time Super Bowl champion.
