Notre Dame made its hiring of its new special teams coordinator official over the weekend. On Saturday, the Irish formally introduced Marty Biagi to the position.

Biagi, who spent last season at Ole Miss in the same role, replaces former special teams coordinator Brian Mason. Mason left Notre Dame last month to take over the special teams unit with the Indianapolis Colts.

The 37-year-old Biagi has been in the coaching ranks for 12 years, including a stop in South Bend for the 2016 season. Biagi served as special teams analyst that year. Biagi, a former punter and placekicker at Marshall, held his first Power Five position as Purdue’s special teams coordinator from 2020-21 before joining the Rebels.

Biagi also coached at North Texas (special teams coordinator, 2017-19), South Dakota (cornerbacks, 2015), Southern (special teams coordinator, 2012) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (co-defensive coordinator, 2011).

“We are pleased to add a coach of the caliber of Marty Biagi to our program,” head coach Marcus Freeman said in a statement. “He has coached his special teams units to great success at multiple schools. He is an elite recruiter and developer of talent. We are excited to have Marty here with us.”

Biagi’s top accomplishments include being named a finalist for the FootballScoop.com Special Teams Coordinator of the Year twice.

Barring any changes, Notre Dame’s coaching staff for the 2023 season is complete. The Irish elevated tight ends coach Gerad Parker to offensive coordinator, hired Gino Guidugli to coach quarterbacks and Joe Rudolph replaced the retired Harry Hiestand.
