It’s been quite the offseason for Notre Dame’s recruiting department, losing general Chad Bowden and director of player personnel Zaire Turner to USC, plus being in the headlines in a dramatic courting of Texas Tech’s James Blanchard to replace Bowden.

And the latest departure broke on Thursday evening from Football Scoop’s John Brice. Notre Dame director of recruiting Caleb Davis is “on the verge” of joining San Diego State as the Aztecs’ new general manager, per Brice.

Blue & Gold and On3’s Pete Nakos can confirm Brice’s report; the expectation is that Davis is headed to SDSU.

Davis graduated from Cincinnati in 2021 and joined the Notre Dame football program in an intern-type role that year. He grew into a key part of the Fighting Irish recruiting office with an “analyst” title before leaving with ex-Notre Dame offensive coordinator Gerad Parker for Troy.

Davis ran the Trojans’ high school and transfer portal recruiting efforts for six months before returning to Notre Dame last summer. He replaced Dre Brown, who left for his alma mater of Illinois (and is now at USC with Bowden and Turner), as director of recruiting.

He played a key role in keeping Notre Dame’s recruiting efforts together after Bowden’s departure.

On-campus recruiting coordinator Becca Sites, assistant general manager Carter Auman and recruiting analyst Deland McCullough II remain as front-facing figures in the recruiting office.

Notre Dame has at least two hires to make in the recruiting office; Freeman was already looking to hire a staffer.

On Thursday afternoon, the Fighting Irish announced the hiring of Mike Martin to replace Bowden as the Fighting Irish’s new general manager.

“Mike Martin is an innovative, forward-thinking, organized leader, who is also elite at talent evaluation,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said in a statement. “He is a great communicator and has valuable experience in roster building and management, as he was a vital piece of enhancing and developing the Detroit Lions’ roster over the last few years. Additionally, his expertise in utilizing sports science and analytics will help us continue to elevate our program.”
