Newsstand: Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard named to another award’s preseason watch list
Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard has added another preseason honor to his list of accolades. On Thursday, the Davey O’Brien Foundation named Leonard to its award watch list. The Davey O’Brien Award is given annually to the nation’s top quarterback. Thirty-six other quarterbacks were recognized on the watch list.
In addition to the Davey O’Brien Award, Leonard earned spots on the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award (best player in college football) and Comeback Player of the Year watch lists.
A Notre Dame football player has never won the award since its inception in 1981. However, it has had three players named finalists: Tony Rice (1988, 1989), Rick Mirer (1992) and Brady Quinn (2005, 2006).
The Davey O’Brien Foundation will release an official midseason watch list of 35 players on Oct. 29, semifinalists on Nov. 12 and three finalists on Nov. 26. They will announce the winner on Dec. 12.
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels won the award last season. The complete Davey O’Brien Award Watch List is available here.
