Newsstand: What the spread opened as for the Notre Dame vs. USC game
Following the worst loss in the coach Marcus Freeman era, Vegas still likes Notre Dame to beat Southern California when the two rivals square off on Saturday night. According to Vegas Insider, the Fighting Irish opened as a 1-point favorite against the Trojans. The over/under opened at 66.5 points
No. 14 Louisville defeated No. 21 Notre Dame 33-20 last Saturday. The 13-point deficit is the most in Freeman’s 21 games as head coach. Before losing to the Cardinals, Notre Dame’s worst loss was 11 points to USC on Nov. 26. The Trojans took down the Irish 38-27 in Los Angeles last season.
It’s the sixth time the Irish have been favored in a game this season. Vegas previously gave Notre Dame the edge against Navy, Tennessee State (-48.5), NC State (-7), Central Michigan (-34.5), Duke (-5) and Louisville (-6.5). The Irish covered every spread besides its 41-17 victory over CMU on Sept. 16. Notre Dame’s (+3) 17-14 loss to Ohio State on Sept. 23 was a push.
Because they lost to Louisville, Notre Dame also failed to cover a 6.5-point margin. The Irish are 3-2-1 against the spread in 2023.
