Notre Dame weather delay: Game against Stanford suspended in the third quarter
No. 11 Notre Dame football’s home game against Stanford on Saturday has been suspended due to lightning in the area. The Fighting Irish lead the Cardinal 42-7 at the end of the third quarter. The game will resume at 7:12 p.m. ET. Television coverage will be broadcast on CNBC.
As noted by ESPN, NCAA guidelines require a 30-minute delay if there is a lightning delay within an eight-mile radius of a stadium. If there is another lightning strike during that period, the clock restarts.
At about 6:10 p.m. ET, the 77.622 fans in attendance were required to leave Notre Dame Stadium due to lightning. The field was also cleared, and the teams retreated to the locker room.
Stanford returned to the field at 7 p.m. Notre Dame followed shortly thereafter.
Before the lighting delay, the Irish poured it on the Cardinal. Through three quarters, they outgained Stanford 362-177 on offense. Irish quarterback Riley Leonard accounted for 260 of those yards, with a season-high 229 passing yards and another 31 on the ground.
Leonard has 3 passing touchdowns and a rushing score.
The Notre Dame defense was just as impressive, limiting Stanford to 3.5 yards per play and forcing a turnover. Junior defensive lineman Joshua Burnham had a forced fumble after taking away the ball on a speed option and returning it 15 yards.
Two plays later, junior running back Jadarian Price scored a 16-yard touchdown. Sophomore running back Jeremiyah Love also had a 39-yard rushing score in the third quarter.
