Notre Dame sophomore TE Holden Staes ruled out vs. Stanford due to shoulder injury
The Notre Dame football program (8-3) is without Holden Staes on Saturday against Stanford (3-8). The Notre Dame Football Communications Team announced on social media 14 minutes after kickoff that the sophomore tight end had a shoulder injury.
“After going through warm-ups before the game today, (Notre Dame football) sophomore TE Holden Staes has been ruled out for the contest with a shoulder injury,” the ND Football Communications Team said.
Fellow sophomore Eli Raridon and freshman Cooper Flanagan started in Staes’ place at tight end.
The 6-foot-4 1/2, 242-pound Staes had appeared in all 11 previous games this season for the No. 18 Fighting Irish. He had 15 catches for 176 yards (11.7 yards per catch) and 4 touchdowns.
The Irish were already without one of their starting tight ends going into Week 13. They lost junior Mitchell Evans for the season on Oct. 28 against Pittsburgh with a torn ACL. The 6-5 1/8, 251-pound Evans caught a team-high 5 passes for 66 yards in Notre Dame’s 58-7 victory over the Panthers. It brought his season total to 29 receptions for 422 yards (14.6 yards per catch) and 1 touchdown.
Staes only trailed Evans in tight end snaps this season. The Atlanta Westminster School product, Staes, had 369 snaps this year compared to Wadsworth (Ohio) High graduate Evans’ 425. Flanagan (98) and Raridon (92) have combined to play 190 snaps. Raridon did not make his 2023 season debut until Oct. 7 against Louisville.
