Newsstand: Former Notre Dame wide receiver transfers to Big 12 school

Following his freshman season at Notre Dame in 2023, wide receiver Tobias Merriweather entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and signed with the California Golden Bears. At the end of April, he re-entered the portal, and he inked with the Utah Utes.
After not appearing in a game for the Golden Bears (6-6) until November due to injury, Merriweather played in the final five games. He caught 11 passes for 125 yards and 1 touchdown. In 23 career games, the 6-5, 195-pounder has hauled in 24 receptions for 430 yards and 4 scores.
Merriweather arrived at Notre Dame as a four-star prospect and the No. 23 wide receiver in the class of 2022 according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He struggled to earn consistent playing time as a true freshman. He only caught one pass, but it was a good one — a 41-yard touchdown against Stanford. As a sophomore, Merriweather came along a little and caught 14 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Still, Merriweather couldn’t quite make himself a staple of the Notre Dame offense even though the Fighting Irish were bombarded by injuries at wide receiver. Notre Dame fired wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey three days after the Stanford game, and Merriweather entered the portal one day later.

UCLA was another contender for Merriweather out of the portal, but he’s looking to tap into his potential for his remaining eligibility at Utah.

Quote of the day
“He can play cornerback or safety. It sounds like they’re recruiting him at corner, but he might grow into a safety. His speed is good and has great instincts. He has a lot of people who believe in him, and Pouncey was nationally recruited.”
