Newsstand: Notre Dame football transfer addition named a player that could shape 2024 CFP race
The Notre Dame football program took a strategic approach to the NCAA transfer portal this offseason. The Fighting Irish added eight new faces, comprising nearly a 10th of the 2024 roster.
On Thursday, ESPN released its transfer portal superlatives, discussing the best signings, quarterback moves, spring questions and more. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg tapped one of Notre Dame’s additions as an under-the-radar transfer who will shape the 2024 College Football Playoff race.
Rittenberg went with former Clemson wide receiver, Beaux Collins.
“I’m excited to see what Clemson transfer Collins brings to Notre Dame’s passing game, which has lacked production at wide receiver and been overly reliant on its tight ends,” Rittenberg said. “He’s a former top-50 recruit who had 510 yards on 38 receptions last year for Clemson, recording four or more catches in six games.
“Collins will catch passes from another ACC transfer, Duke’s Riley Leonard, as new Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock tries to ignite a passing game that finished 48th nationally last fall.”
A product of Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, Collins played three seasons at Clemson before announcing his transfer to Notre Dame on Dec. 10. In 32 career games, he caught 38 passes for 1,290 yards (14.2 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. His 38 receptions and 510 yards in 2023 were both career highs.
Mitchell is one of two players Notre Dame plucked from the transfer portal who have not yet enrolled at the university. He and Northwestern defensive back transfer Rod Heard II expect to join the program in June.

Notre Dame Quote of the Day
“Notre Dame cornerbacks coach, Coach (Mike) Mickens, did a good job at allowing us to cover all types of wide receivers. I seen a lot at Notre Dame. There were short, shiftier guys. There were tall, more physical, possession reception guys. I was able to guard all those guys at Notre Dame. I attribute that to him for allowing us to have that freedom.”
