Notre Dame offensive lineman Ty Chan chooses transfer portal destination

Former Notre Dame football offensive lineman Ty Chan has found a new home. On Monday, On3 college sports business and transfer portal reporter Pete Nakos reported Chan has signed with UConn.
The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Chan entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last Thursday. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Chan never started a game in his Notre Dame career and only played eight snaps on offense in 2024. Six of those snaps came against Navy on Oct. 26. He’s been a regular on special teams units, primarily on the field goal and extra team point protection teams. Chan recorded a tackle against Northern Illinois on Sept. 7.
A product of Groton (Mass.) Lawrence Academy, Chan ranked as the nation’s No. 269 overall player and No. 18 interior offensive lineman, according to the 2022 On3 Industry Ranking. On3’s rankings weren’t as high on him, listing him as a three-star player and the No. 42 interior offensive lineman in the country.
Chan initially committed to the Irish over offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Boston College and others.
Notre Dame has the following offensive lineman on scholarship for the 2025 season: Guerby Lambert, Will Black, Owen Strebig, Matty Augustine, Charles Jagusah, Sullivan Absher, Aamil Wagner, Styles Prescod, Peter Jones, Anthonie Knapp, Chris Terek, Joe Otting, Billy Schrauth, Cameron Herron and Ashton Craig.

Chan one of four Notre Dame offensive linemen to enter NCAA Transfer Portal
None were surprises, but Chan is the fourth Notre Dame offensive lineman to enter the transfer portal since the Irish lost to Ohio State in the national championship.
Sophomore Sam Pendleton entered the portal Wednesday morning and eventually signed with Tennessee. Seniors Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler entered the portal Thursday afternoon and should also attract significant Power 4 interest.
An exodus at a single position group would be a red flag for many programs, but not for Notre Dame’s offensive line. The Irish have a logjam up front, with established starters like Wagner, Schrauth, Craig, Knapp and Jagusah all coming back with two or more years of eligibility remaining.
Youngsters such as Lambert, Black and Absher could challenge for starting spots soon, too.
Notre Dame offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, navigated a difficult situation in 2024 with little returning experience. He may have an equally difficult time picking a starting five in 2025, but for different reasons. The Irish are loaded on the offensive line, but the side effect is talented players will look for better opportunities elsewhere.
