Notre Dame walk-on tight end Charlie Selna enters NCAA Transfer Portal
On Thursday, Blue & Gold recruiting insider Mike Singer reported that a walk-on tight end, Charlie Selna, had entered the NCAA Transfer Portal as a graduate transfer. The 6-foot-6, 242-pound Selna has one more year of eligibility remaining.
A product of Atherton (Calif.) Sacred Heart Prep, Selna joined the Fighting Irish during the 2020 season. After four years of only contributing in practice, he debuted on the punt return unit in Week 7 vs. Stanford. Selna eventually solidified a role on the punt return team, playing 15 more snaps across four more games. Nine of those snaps came in the College Football Playoff.
This season, Notre Dame finished 15th in the nation of 133 FBS teams in punt return defense, only allowing 4.15 yards per return.
In addition to his role on punt return, he played once on kick coverage and once on kick return. He has not recorded any official career statistics.
Selna is one of 10 Notre Dame players to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal
In addition to Selna, nine other Irish players have entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Three of those entries came during the 2024 season.
Before it began, Blue & Gold learned defensive linemen Tyson Ford and Aiden Gobaira were no longer on the team after medically retiring. Both eventually decided to resume their college football careers, officially putting their names in the transfer portal in October. Ford eventually committed to California, and Gobaira chose James Madison.

During the 2024 season, junior cornerback Jaden Mickey stepped away from the team after four games to preserve an extra year of eligibility. He signed with California and has two years left to play.
Though other players had the chance to enter the transfer portal, Notre Dame was the only team not to have a player leave the team during its College Football Playoff run. Since then, seven players have entered, including Selna.
Sophomore Sam Pendleton was the first Wednesday. Then, graduate student wide receivers Deion Colzie and Jayden Thomas followed suit. Selna and offensive linemen Ty Chan, Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler entered the transfer portal on Thursday. Pendleton, Coogan and Spindler all started games for the Irish this season.
Notre Dame signed eight players out of the transfer portal: Virginia wide receiver Malachi Fields, Wisconsin wide receiver Will Pauling, Arkansas tight end Ty Washington, Louisville defensive lineman Jared Dawson, Southern Cal defensive lineman Elijah Hughes, Alabama defensive back Devonta Smith, Virginia Tech safety Jalen Stroman and North Carolina kicker Noah Burnette.
