Newsstand: Details on ex-Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman’s contract with Washington revealed
Former Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman didn’t get drafted over the weekend, but he was picked up by the Washington Commanders and will be one of the higher-paid undrafted free agents.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero believes that Hartman will be in “Washington’s plans for 2024” based on what Hartman is being paid.
“The Commanders gave Hartman one of the biggest guarantees among undrafted free agents: a $20,000 signing bonus and $225,000 base salary guarantee,” Pelissero tweeted.
And in the tweet second tweet listed below, the South Bend Tribune’s Mike Berardino shares the rookie contract/signing bonuses for the Fighting Irish players who were selected in the NFL Draft.
Offensive tackle Joe Alt will ink a rookie deal for four years and $33.1 million with the Chargers. He’ll receive $20.9 million as a signing bonus. His contract also includes a fifth-year option for the team to keep him through the 2028 NFL season.

It wasn’t always easy for Hartman in his lone season with the Fighting Irish. In nine wins, Hartman completed 139 of 208 passes (66.8 percent) for 2,114 yards with 21 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. In three losses to Ohio State, Louisville and Clemson, Hartman was 52-of-93 passing (55.9 percent) for 575 yards with 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
In total, Hartman connected on 191 of 301 throws (63.5 percent) for 2,689 yards with 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions at Notre Dame. He added 3 scores on the ground. Those statistics only tell a small part of his story. Yes, his lasting image in college football will always be one in a Notre Dame uniform. But most of his accolades, of which he has plenty, came in Wake Forest threads.
The 24-year-old North Carolina native was 944-for-1,597 passing (59.1 percent) for 12,967 yards with 110 touchdown passes and 41 interceptions in five seasons with the Demon Deacons.
