Tim Hyde’s initial Notre Dame spring game thoughts…
“You go into the spring game looking at the young guys. I was very impressed with so many redshirt freshmen and true freshmen — that’s what it’s about. It’s not about watching Joe Alt; it’s about the young guys and any other things you may have seen — guys improving. Jayden Thomas keeps getting better. A big disappointment — I’ll be honest — was Deion Colzie. He looked like the same player we’ve seen for two years in a way. But some dudes really stepped up; there were some offensive linemen who looked absolutely amazing.

“My first reaction is that there are some dudes in the freshman and sophomore class. When they get on the field, they’re going to be electric for Notre Dame in the future. I’m very excited about those guys.”
On the Notre Dame quarterbacks…
“It looked like two different offenses. Hartman looked really good on the RPOs and had some really nice throws deep. Buchner — they didn’t do any RPOs but when they finally did, he hit the nice slant to Tyree for about 15 yards. It looked like more drop back early for Buchner. Hartman had a natural flow for the offense. He hit Jayden Thomas for a couple big Thomas. The way Clarence Lewis was covering early, it looked like the Oklahoma State [Fiesta Bowl] game all over again. That was a disappointment.
“Overall, it was a fun game.”
More on the quarterbacks…
“Buchner didn’t look good. Let’s be honest; he didn’t look good. You have two quarterbacks playing with different offensive lines, running backs and receivers, but you still want to look at the quarterback himself and see how they do. Hartman threw some nice balls; he had a nice rhythm going.”
