On Sunday, the Notre Dame men’s basketball program bolstered their 2025-26 roster by adding Northern Arizona transfer Carson Towt. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward is a big-time acquisition as one of college basketball’s best rebounders. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Fighting Irish coach Micah Shrewsberry acquired Towt to play the “five” position. Last season for NAU, Towt averaged a nation’s best 12.4 rebounds per game. He also had 20 double-doubles, which was sixth in the country.

Towt arrives in South Bend with the ability to score and dish out passes from the post, filling Notre Dame’s biggest need entering Year 3 of the Shrewsberry era. In 34 games last season, he averaged a career-high 13.3 points per game to go along with 3.4 assists. He was efficient when shooting the basketball, posting a 56.8 field goal percentage — good for 29th in the nation. His 199 baskets ranked 94th.

According to the On3 transfer portal industry ranking, Towt is the nation’s No. 354 overall player and No. 82 power forward available for transfer. He holds a three-star rating.

The Irish also targeted former Nevada big man Nick Davidson. However, he eventually transferred to Clemson. They were also in the mix for Central Arkansas forward Nehemiah Turner, who planned to officially visit campus. But now, with Towt in the fold, the Irish no longer plan to host Turner.

In addition to Towt, Notre Dame would also like to acquire a combo guard.

A look at who could play the five for Notre Dame men’s basketball in 2025-26

Towt will have the chance to battle senior Kebba Njie for the starting five position next season. The 6-10, 250-pound Njie appeared in 31 games in 2024-25 — starting 30 — and averaged 6.1 points and 5.9 rebounds. He also had 14 assists and 41 turnovers.

Incoming freshman Tommy Ahneman out of West Fargo (N.D.) Cretin-Derham Hall also gives the Irish another option. He was a three-star recruit who ranked as the No. 151 overall player, No. 15 center nationally and No. 2 player in North Carolina in the 2025 class, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
