If you’re a Notre Dame fan who’s certain Irish quarterback Tyler Buchner will be the sophomore sensation many in South Bend and beyond are hoping him to be, now is the time to lay some money down on him to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy.

Vegas Insider recently released a list of the top 61 candidates to hoist the Heisman at the end of the year. You’ve got to scroll toward the bottom to find anyone from Notre Dame. Buchner and junior quarterback Drew Pyne both have +15000 odds. The only odds worse than those on the list are shared by a group of six players at +20000. Notre Dame junior running back Chris Tyree is one of the six.

Buchner, Pyne and Tyree were the only Notre Dame players to make the list.

Junior tight end Michael Mayer is probably Notre Dame’s best overall player, but only two tight ends have ever won the Heisman — Yale’s Larry Kelley in 1936 and Notre Dame’s own Leon Hart in 1949. Of late, it has typically gone to a quarterback or running back. A player from one of those two positions has won the award in every season since 1998 except for 2020 when Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith took it home.

That in mind, it’s not too surprising to only see the Notre Dame signal-callers and Tyree on the list. And it shouldn’t be too perplexing to find them so low on it, either. Buchner and Pyne have never started a collegiate game, and they’re still in the midst of a battle to earn the right to do so when the Irish take on Ohio State at the Horseshoe in Columbus on Sept. 3. Tyree has been second-fiddle to Los Angeles Rams draftee Kyren Williams his whole career to this point.

Notre Dame to face three of top five early Heisman favorites in 2022

Notre Dame has not had a Heisman winner since wide receiver Tim Brown in 1987. The Irish have had seven winners, including Hart and Brown, in program history; QB Angelo Bertelli (1943), QB Johnny Lujack (1947), Hart (1949), RB Johnny Lattner (1953), QB Paul Hornung (1956), QB John Huarte (1964) and Brown (1987).

The Irish likely won’t add to that list in 2022. But if you’re feeling adventurous, betting on one of the three blue and gold players to appear on the Vegas Insider list would yield tremendous returns in the unlikely event that one of them won it.

You never know.
