The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell out of the top 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 following their 17-14 home loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday. Notre Dame (4-1) checked in at No. 11 in the latest poll reveal Sunday afternoon, down two spots from the team’s No. 9 ranking last week.

The Irish had a serious chance to ascend toward the top five if they could hold on to a late lead over the Buckeyes, but they just couldn’t get the job done. Ohio State went on a 65-yard touchdown drive that began with 1:26 left in the fourth quarter, and the Buckeyes punched in the game-winning score with one second on the clock. Notre Dame only had 10 men on the field for the one-yard touchdown rush from OSU running back Chip Trayanum.

“We were trying to get a fourth defensive lineman on the field, and I told him just stay off because we can’t afford a penalty,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said. “I didn’t have any timeouts. We couldn’t afford a penalty. Yeah, it’s on us. Got to be better.”

Ironically, calling a timeout Freeman didn’t have or taking a penalty on purpose probably would have been the more prudent play. Notre Dame should have taken its chances with one more player on the field even if it meant Ohio State got to line up half a yard closer to the goal line. The rushing play went right at the vacant spot along the Irish defensive line.

It gets a little easier for Notre Dame this week, maybe? Just barely. Notre Dame goes on the road to face No. 17 Duke (4-0) in a game that will be accompanied once again by the ESPN College GameDay crew. GameDay set up in South Bend Saturday for a rowdy morning on Notre Dame’s campus. The scene should be electric in Durham with Duke supporters going all in on what could be the best Blue Devils team in a long, long time.
