Notre Dame is merely receiving votes in the Coaches Poll and AP Top 25. But the Fighting Irish are deemed to be one of the best 15 teams in the country per ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI).

A 28-20 victory over then-No. 16 BYU (4-2) in the Shamrock Series in Las Vegas this past Saturday shot the Irish up to No. 15 in the FPI. They were previously No. 18.

The FPI is based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season, and the metric that is determined represents how many points above or below average a team is. Notre Dame is deemed to be 13.5 points above average. Alabama owns the best mark in the country at 29.2. Duke and Troy have an FPI of 0.2 while Arizona State and UTSA have an FPI of -0.2, so those are the most averaged teams in the country.

ESPN’s FPI gives the Irish a 4.6% chance to win the rest of their regular season games and a 99.5% chance to win at least six games to become bowl eligible. The FPI’s season-long prediction is 8-4. That’d be a downturn from at least 10 wins in each of the last five seasons, but it wouldn’t be so bad after expectations were altered after an 0-2 start. A 9-4 season with a win in a bowl game would breed optimism in South Bend for 2023.

Here are the top 25 teams entering Week 7 per ESPN’s FPI.

Quote of the weekend

“I don’t really worry about stats. I just worry about winning. I have no clue— I couldn’t even tell you a ballpark for how many yards I threw for. Whatever. I don’t really think about that. It’s just play by play.”
