Notre Dame football DB Caleb Offord enters transfer portal
Notre Dame sophomore defensive back Caleb Offord has entered the NCAA transfer portal, per multiple reports.
Offord signed with Notre Dame in the 2020 recruiting class and also held offers from the likes of Arkansas, Duke, Memphis, Purdue and Vanderbilt. He committed to the Fighting Irish in the summer of 2019 and picked up an offer from Oklahoma a few weeks later. Offord stayed true to his pledge with the Irish.
Offord, who ranked as a three-star recruit and the No. 483 overall recruit and No. 38 cornerback in the 2020 cycle per the On3 Consensus, played in three snaps as a true freshman, per Pro Football Focus.
During the 2021 campaign, the 6-1, 192-pounder played just seven snaps with the appearances coming against Navy and Toledo.
“It’s a special place,” Offord told Blue & Gold about Notre Dame at the time of his commitment. “If you get a chance to go there, you can’t really pass it up. If you’re a student at Notre Dame, you’re set for life. You’re really getting the best of both worlds from an academic and football standpoint. You’re getting everything from one school.”
When Offord signed with Notre Dame, he was the only recruit from Mississippi to sign with the Irish in the Brian Kelly era.
Monday a busy day for Notre Dame football
Offord entering the transfer portal was far from the only Notre Dame football news on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.
Notre Dame and wide receivers coach Del Alexander parted ways, sources confirmed to BlueandGold.com. Alexander held the position since 2017 but will not remain on staff for head coach Marcus Freeman’s first full season at the helm in 2022.

While Offord is leaving, fellow defensive back Houston Griffith announced Monday that he is staying in South Bend for a “super senior” season. He made 38 tackles and recovered one fumble this year.
Fighting Irish junior offensive lineman Quinn Carroll also announced Monday he has entered the NCAA transfer portal. He will be a graduate transfer.
Carroll did not play in his freshman season because of an ACL injury. He played in three games as a redshirt freshman in 2020 and was a participant in all 13 games this past season, mostly on special teams.
News also broke that former Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis will join Irish head coach Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish coaching staff according to a tweet from the account of the Columbus, Ohio, radio show Laurinaitis is a host on. Laurinaitis will finish this week on the show before arriving in South Bend.
Laurinaitis’ role on Freeman’s staff remains unclear at this time. Freeman and Laurinaitis were teammates at Ohio State from 2005-08. The duo helped the Buckeyes reach two BCS National Championship games and two Fiesta Bowls during that span.
