The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 2022 Gator Bowl Champions. Head coach Marcus Freeman earned his first career postseason victory with the 45-38 win over South Carolina.

• Freeman says the opportunity to finish as a champion is a great feeling.

• Freeman says he’s happy to send the seniors out with a win.

• Freeman says the Irish were looking for a “specific look” on the 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. “We shouldn’t have threw it. We shouldn’t have called it.”

• Freeman says Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is an example of going through the bumpy road and coming out better on the other side after not playing since Sept. 10 because of a shoulder injury.

• Freeman says this week was the first time he met South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer. He calls him “first class.”

• Freeman says the Irish practiced the fake punt a lot this season. It worked tonight.

• Freeman ays what he has said for a year now: this is an offensive line and defensive line driven program. Ultimately, the Irish won this game with 264 rushing yards. The offensive line was a big part of that.

• Freeman says there was dialogue over the headset about calling a timeout before South Carolina’s fake field goal for a touchdown. The coaches came to a consensus that the Irish’s special teams unit had everything covered. “It was just a miscommunication.”
