Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman press conference live updates

• Freeman starts be sending thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families at the University of Virginia.

• Freeman says it’s always great to learn tough losses in wins rather than losses.

• Players of the game vs. Navy: Braden Lenzy, Xavier Watts, Jack Kiser.

• Freeman says there were “a whole bunch of different things” that disallowed Notre Dame to pass protect and throw the ball in the second half vs. Navy. “In order to get rid of that pressure, you’re going to have to complete some passes.”

• Freeman says Lenzy’s big game was a reminder for everyone on the team to just keep working. The rewards will come. “Sometimes you don’t control the opportunities that come your way. You control how prepared you are and how hard you work.”

• Freeman says Boston College quarterback Emmett Morehead has some similarities to Phil Jurkovec. He says the Notre Dame defense won’t change with Morehead at QB. Freeman praises Morehead’s maturity for a redshirt freshman.

• Freeman says Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers is as good of a wideout as Notre Dame has seen this season. The Irish have to account for his speed.

• Kiser and senior safety Brandon Joseph are dealing with ankle sprains. Kiser’s sounds less serious than Joseph’s. Joseph missed the Navy game.

• Freeman: “Everyone wants in on that punt block unit. Everyone wants a piece of that.”

• Freeman says linebackers Prince Kollie (sophomore) and Junior Tuihalamaka (freshman) were good vs. Navy, but there is room for improvement. He says it’s tough to face the triple-option offense without having many reps against it under your belt. JD Bertrand was out with a groin injury.

• Freeman says he’s not sure if Jaylen Sneed would have made his debut vs. Navy if Bertrand was available.

• Freeman says freshman running back Gi’Bran Payne made his debut last week because Joe Wilkins Jr. left the team and left a void as the Irish’s off-return man.

• Bertrand practiced yesterday and should play vs. Boston College.

• Freeman sounds like he still has confidence in kicker Blake Grupe, who has missed a field goal in four-straight games and has not made one since Oct. 29 vs. Syracuse.

• Freeman says the second-half sacks vs. Navy were execution errors, not necessarily calling the wrong plays. “Drew has to get the ball out of his hands, and we have to help him get the ball out of his hands.”

• Freeman: “The play calling in the second half was no different than the play calling in the first half. We just didn’t hit them.”
