Where Notre Dame football finished the regular season ranked in the polls
Notre Dame finishing the 2022 regular season ranked in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 was far from likely when the Fighting Irish were 3-3 and reeling coming off a loss to Stanford. But head coach Marcus Freeman‘s group righted the ship.
Notre Dame (8-4) checked in at No. 19 in both the Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday. The Irish are the top-ranked four-loss team in both sets of rankings. They were No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the Coaches Poll last week before falling in the regular season finale 38-27 to USC. The Trojans (11-1) are No. 4 in both polls ahead of their upcoming tilt against Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

It was an up-and-down campaign for Freeman and company. They started the year ranked inside the top five but quickly fell out of the rankings altogether with an 0-2 start, losing to then-No. 2 Ohio State on the road in the season opener and Marshall the following week in the home opener. Notre Dame did not make its way back into the rankings until beating then-No. 4 Clemson 35-14 on Nov. 5.

College Football Playoff rankings revealed
The Irish beat three ranked teams (No. 16 BYU, No. 16 Syracuse and No. 4 Clemson) at the time of kickoff, but the Tigers were the only one of that trio that remained ranked at the end of the regular season. And even they went on to drop their regular season finale, 31-30, at unranked South Carolina.
It’s time for the Irish to play the waiting game. A destination for the program’s sixth-straight bowl appearance and 12th in the last 13 seasons will be revealed on Dec. 4.
