Newsstand: Colts formally announce hire of two former Notre Dame assistants
Two Notre Dame 2022 staff members headed south down US-31 earlier this month to take NFL jobs with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts officially added them Tuesday.
Brian Mason, Notre Dame’s special teams coordinator in 2022, will hold that same role with the Colts. Joining him in Indianapolis is former Notre Dame offensive lineman and grad assistant Chris Watt, who was announced Tuesday as the assistant offensive line coach to Tony Sparano Jr.
Mason does not have a direct tie to newly hired Colts head coach Shane Steichen or either of the Colts’ coordinators. He’s from the Indianapolis suburb of Zionsville, though, and a strong debut season with the Irish last fall put him on NFL radars. He has been a special teams coordinator since 2018, with a four-year stint at Cincinnati before coming to Notre Dame last year.
Watt and Steichen, meanwhile, have a tie from Watt’s playing career. Watt was a third-round pick of the then-San Diego Chargers in 2014 and played three seasons for them. Steichen was an offensive quality control with the Chargers from 2014-15 and the quarterbacks coach in 2016.
