For the second straight year, more than half of Notre Dame’s signing class enrolled early.

Twelve of the Irish’s 21 signees from the 2022 cycle are on campus for spring practice and were assigned their first jersey numbers earlier this semester – as were mid-year transfers Brandon Joseph and Blake Grupe. Here’s a position-by-position look at each newcomer’s number and the last scholarship player to wear it on that side of the ball.

Quarterback

Last worn by: holder/long snapper Hunter Smith (2013-15). Smith was the last specialist to wear No. 99 (he was a walk-on). Junior defensive lineman Rylie Mills has worn No. 99 since 2020.

Notre Dame has nine summer enrollees who signed in December: wide receiver Tobias Merriweather, tight end Eli Raridon, tight end Holden Staes, offensive lineman Aamil Wagner, offensive lineman Ty Chan, offensive lineman Ashton Craig, defensive tackle Donovan Hinish, cornerback Benjamin Morrison and punter Bryce McFerson. They will arrive on campus in June.

No scholarship returning players have changed numbers this spring. The Irish began spring practice March 17 and end it April 23 with the Blue-Gold Game (1 p.m. ET, Peacock).

Freshman heights/weights

All 23 freshmen are listed at the same heights and weights as they were when Notre Dame announced their signings in December, except for Gobaira. He is listed at 6-5 and 230 pounds on the spring roster, up from 6-5 and 224 on signing day.
