Former Notre Dame football players Jack Coan and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa will share the same sideline one more time Thursday.

Two of the most important players on a Fighting Irish team that went 11-2 and finished No. 8 in the final Associated Press Poll of the 2021 season, Coan and Tagovailoa-Amosa will compete as members of the West team during the East-West Shrine Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The game kicks off on NFL Network at 8 p.m. ET Thursday.

The Shrine Bowl is the longest running annual college football all-star game. It took a one-year hiatus last year because of COVID-19 concerns, but it’s back this year for the 97th edition. Former Notre Dame defensive lineman Alan Page is the lone Irish representative in the Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame.

Coan will share the field with fellow West quarterbacks Skylar Thompson of Kansas State and Brock Purdy of Iowa State. Some of the more intriguing pass-catching options on the West side include former Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, former Virginia tight end Jelani Woods and Indiana’s Ty Fryfogle. The West will also have former North Carolina running back Ty Chandler, who had 101 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns against Notre Dame last fall.

Coan won the the Pat Tillman Award, which recognizes the player who best exemplifies intelligence, sportsmanship, and service, earlier this week. The former Wisconsin signal caller threw for 6,428 yards with 48 touchdowns and 14 touchdowns in his college career. In one year at Notre Dame, he threw for 3,150 yards with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Tagovailoa-Amosa is tasked with chasing down former Miami quarterback D’Eriq King, Brown’s EJ Perry and Kent State’s Dustin Crum. Tagovailoa-Amosa and former Tennessee defensive tackle Matthew Butler were listed in an ESPN article highlight 15 potential standouts to watch in the game. They’ll have the chance to line up alongside each other on the same defensive line.

The ESPN story was especially high on Tagovailoa-Amosa. ESPN’s Jordan Reid said Tagovailoa-Amosa impressively split a double-team in practice this week for a tackle for loss.

“A lengthy and powerful player, Tagovailoa-Amosa’s smarts with knowing how to use his limbs as a run defender coupled with his violence as a pass-rusher helped him piece together a great week of practice,” Reid wrote. “Working half-line drills that tested the sturdiness of defensive lineman as they battled against two blockers, he constantly displayed his shock and shed ability.”

Tagovailoa-Amosa totaled 81 tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in five seasons at Notre Dame. He scored one touchdown, a lengthy return in Notre Dame’s 55-0 victory over Georgia Tech this past November. He’s a potential third-day pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
