Tempo was a buzzword during Notre dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees‘ media availability this week. So might as well hammer the word even further.

The definition of ESPN’s SP+ rankings, created by Bill Connelly at Football Outsiders in 2008, is “a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It’s a predictive model that measures “the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football.”

Each team in the country is given an overall rating comprised of an offense rating, a defense rating and a special teams rating. Notre Dame’s national ranking is No. 46 with an SP+ rating of 6.3. For reference, Ohio State owns the top mark in the FBS with its score of 29.9.

The Buckeyes have the No. 2 offensive rating (44.7) and No. 5 defensive rating (14.6). Notre Dame’s figures in those categories are No. 67 (28.2) and No. 35 (22.2), respectively, further illustrating the offense being the team’s biggest weakness. The Irish’s special teams ranking is No. 16 with a rating of 0.3. The top mark in the country is Arkansas State’s 0.4.

Quote of the weekend

“He’s a big teddy bear when it comes to giving back. It’s always been important to him. When you recruited him and you know his family and you know his mom and dad, family is very important to him. That initiative of giving back is really who he is to his core.”
