The preseason expectations for Notre Dame in Marcus Freeman’s second season are lower than they were in his first. So say the betting markets.

FanDuel has released 2023 win total over/unders for nine FBS teams, with Notre Dame among them. The Irish’s figure is 8.5. That’s lower than the 9.0 and 9.5 over/unders most betting sites gave them last summer, when both preseason polls and most media outlet rankings pegged them as a top-5-to-10 team. They went 8-4 in the regular season and beat South Carolina in the Gator Bowl.

This offseason, Notre Dame appeared between No. 10 and 15 in most way-too-early preseason rankings. In that context, a lower win total over/under makes sense. It also does when looking at the 2023 schedule.

The Irish’s three marquee opponents in 2023 are the same as 2022: Ohio State, Clemson and USC. They host the Buckeyes (Sept. 23) and Trojans (Oct. 14) and play the Tigers on the road (Nov. 4). Those teams went a combined 33-6 in 2022. All six ACC teams on the 2023 schedule won at least eight games, though, and four of those contests are on the road. Two of the four ACC opponents from 2022 did not reach eight wins.

Notre Dame is an underdog in two of the three games with early betting lines at FanDuel. The Irish are 1.5-point underdogs against USC at home, which has dropped from 3 points when it opened in late February. Ohio State, meanwhile, was an 8.5-point favorite over Notre Dame when the line opened, but that has risen to 10 now. The Irish lost to both by 11 points in 2022. Ohio State’s win total over/under at FanDuel for 2023 is 10.5.

Elsewhere, Notre Dame is a 19.5-point favorite over Navy, which it plays Aug. 26 in Dublin to begin the season. The Irish opened as a 17.5-point favorite. They beat the Midshipmen 35-32 in Baltimore last season.

Notre Dame is +3000 to win the national championship at FanDuel, tied for the 10th-best odds with Tennessee, Washington, Oregon and Texas. Ohio State (+700), USC (+1600) and Clemson (+2000) are above the Irish.

Quarterback Sam Hartman has the sixth-best Heisman odds (+1500).
