Newsstand: Former Notre Dame, current Dallas Cowboys guard Zack Martin holds out from training camp
Last week, news surfaced that six-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin would hold out from training camp because he his unhappy with his current salary. Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Notre Dame product did not show up for Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Calif.
Despite being one of the best guards in the league, Martin makes more than $10 million per year on average less than the top-paid player at the same position. Martin is 33, so he doesn’t have much time to restructure a deal fit for his liking. He’s already outlived the average NFL career, by a long shot.
Of course, Martin is no average player.
Since the Indianapolis native was selected by the Cowboys with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Martin has year in and year out been named one of the best guards in the NFL. He made the first of his six first team All-Pro selections in his rookie season. He has made that exclusive list in three of the last four seasons, too.
Martin is one of five players in the league to receive a Madden 24 overall grade of 99. He’s joined by Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
