What LSU coach Brian Kelly said about former Notre Dame RB Logan Diggs
Former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, now the head coach at LSU going into his second season in Baton Rouge, spoke at SEC Media Days in Nashville on Monday. He was asked about a player he knows very well — one he has reunited with down south.
It’s former Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs.
Kelly and his coaching staff recruited Diggs out of Metairie (La.) Archbishop Rummel, just outside of New Orleans. Diggs went nearly 1,000 miles to spend his first two years of college at Notre Dame. Now he’s just 75 miles away from home at LSU playing for a coach who he trusted enough to make such a large leap coming out of high school.
Kelly touched on how fortunate the Tigers are to have Diggs on their side.
“His ability to catch the ball coming out of the backfield, we like his versatility,” Kelly said. “He played really well at Notre Dame when he was given the opportunity. He was a little limited with a hamstring [injury] last year. We saw him play against South Carolina with the big run. But he’s a very talented player in all areas. Very smart. He can play on all three downs. He’s tough. He’s physical. He’s a big back with speed, vision. It just adds to that room with experience, and that’s what we were looking for.”

Diggs led Notre Dame with 165 carries in 2022. He ran for 822 yards and four touchdowns. The “big run” Kelly alluded to was actually a big catch. Diggs took one 75 yards to the house in the Gator Bowl. It was one of his 10 catches for 211 yards. He also added a 29-yard catch and run touchdown vs. North Carolina in Week 4. Both scores were influential in determining the outcome of those two games; Notre Dame beat UNC 45-32 and South Carolina 45-38.
