For Notre Dame on Saturday, there is an element of, “How about we give that another shot?” The No. 17 Fighting Irish (2-1) host a Mid-American Conference opponent for the second time in three weeks. They hope it goes better than the first time.

Notre Dame lost, 16-14, to Northern Illinois in Week 2. The Irish are up against Miami (Ohio) (0-2) this afternoon. The Irish and RedHawks kick off on NBC at 3:30 ET. Follow along below for live updates of the game and a scoring summary.

First quarter

• The Irish wins the coin toss and defer the option to receive to the second half.

• The Notre Dame defense forces Miami to punt on its first possession, but in his first game action since Week 1 wide receiver Jordan Faison muffs the ensuing punt. Teammate Jaden Mickey was right in front of Faison when he tried to field the ball. The RedHawks recovered on the Irish’s 26-yard line.

• The Irish defense goes to work again, though, and intercepts a Brett Gabbert pass near the goal line to get the Notre Dame offense on the field for the first time today. Corner Christian Gray attacked the ball on the short attempt, and it was tipped up in the air for defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka to pick off.

• The Irish offense goes three-and-out on its first offensive possession of the day, complete with a false start penalty on sophomore left guard Sam Pendleton.

• The Notre Dame defense gets off the field on fourth and 6 via tight coverage from sophomore safety Adon Shuler. It looks like he got away with getting a little handsy, though. With just a couple minutes left in the first quarter, it’s still a scoreless football game.

• Notre Dame had a nice drive going until Riley Leonard missed two easy rollout throws to open targets on back-to-back plays. Then the Irish were flagged for holding on a Leonard scramble. He hit Jaden Greathouse for a good gain to get into Mitch Jeter field goal range, but the snap was bad on what would have been a 51-yard attempt. Jeter picked up the ball off the ground and tried to make a play, but he threw an incomplete pass.

• The first quarter comes to a close in a scoreless tie. Miami is driving into Notre Dame territory…

Second quarter

• Notre Dame is officially losing to a MAC team at home, again. The RedHawks take a 3-0 lead on a short field goal. It’s actually a decent stand for the Irish defense to hold the visitors to just that.

SCORE: Miami 3, Notre Dame 0 (12:32 left in the first half)

• Notre Dame tries to get something going with a reverse from Jayden Harrison to Jeremiyah Love on a kick return, but an illegal block in the back brings back a healthy return from Love. Everything seems to be going wrong for the home team.

• The Irish have to punt the ball away following a three-and-out. Three straight runs for the Irish netting three yards.

• The Irish methodically move the ball down the field, going 87 yards in 10 plays to get into the end zone for the first time on an eight-yard touchdown rush from Leonard. Notre Dame takes the lead. Leonard made some nice passes on the drive, none too far from the line of scrimmage. Dink and dunk. Junior tailback Jadarian Price had some strong rushing gains too, and there were pass interference and face mask flags that aided the Irish too.

SCORE: Notre Dame 7, Miami 3 (3:33 left in the first half)

• The Irish defense makes a good stop, gets the ball back for the offense, and Notre Dame again goes 80-plus yards to get into the end zone. It’s Leonard’s first touchdown pass in an Irish uniform on a beautiful 38-yard strike to Beaux Collins.

SCORE: Notre Dame 14, Miami 3 (1:05 left in the first half)

• Notre Dame could have gotten the ball back again but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Shuler after a third-down stop kept the Miami offense on the field. Irish head coach Marcus Freeman was livid with Shuler on the sideline, and rightfully so. Fortunately for the Irish, it didn’t turn into points on the board for the RedHawks. But it definitely cost the Irish a chance to put up more of their own before the half.

HALFTIME: Notre Dame 14, Miami 3
