The time is now for No. 7 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish take on the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies at 7:30 p.m. ET at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas. Follow along below for live updates and a running game score of the biggest Week 1 matchup of the 2024 college football season.
First quarter
• The stadium has filled in nicely with the sun setting and less than 10 minutes until kickoff. It’s almost game time in the Lone Star State.
• Notre Dame’s defensive captains, Jack Kiser, Benjamin Morrison, Rylie Mills and Xavier Watts are out for the pregame coin toss. Riley Leonard is warming up on the sideline. Notre Dame wins. Heads. Irish defer. Kiser and company are up first.
• Two offsides penalties on the first Texas A&M offensive possession of the game. The Aggies’ hard count is getting the best of the Irish early, and A&M is on the move into Notre Dame territory.
• The Irish get a big stop with the Aggies having just crept into the red zone. A&M opens the scoring with a 34-yard field goal.
SCORE: Texas A&M 3, Notre Dame 0 with 11:07 left in the first quarter
• Riley Leonard picks up a big third down on his first offensive series with the Irish, and he’s targeted after sliding on the play. A&M’s Dalton Brooks is ejected from the game.
• Mitch Jeter, in his first attempt with Notre Dame, is good from 46 yards out. He ties the game at 3-3. The Irish drive stalled after a run to the left, behind freshman tackle Anthonie Knapp and sophomore guard Sam Pendleton, lost three yards on first down. The Irish got it to fourth and three but elected to take the points.
SCORE: Texas A&M 3, Notre Dame 3 with 6:39 left in the first quarter.
• Freshman linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is making his Notre Dame debut in the Irish defense’s second series of the season.
• The Irish committed another defensive penalty, but a false start on the Aggies took away a third and short quarterback sneak conversion and set up third and seven. Notre Dame blitzed safety Adon Shuler, and defensive end Jordan Botelho got pressure on the QB as well, and an incomplete pass got the ball back for the Irish offense.
• The Irish go three and out on their second possession of the game. Pendleton missed an assignment which allowed a free rusher on Leonard, who couldn’t get the ball out to a wide-open Devyn Ford.
• At the end of the third quarter, it’s still 3-3. The Aggies have third and three from the Irish 32 to open the second quarter.
Second quarter
• A false start on A&M makes it third and eight, and a screen only netted the five yards back. The Aggies send the field goal unit onto the field once more … and Randy Bond is good once again from 49 yards. The home team is in front once again.
SCORE: Texas A&M 6, Notre Dame 3 with 14:14 left in the second quarter
• Notre Dame tight end Mitchell Evans was running some warmup sprints during a TV timeout. He’s clearly not healthy enough coming back from his knee surgery to be full-go. A setback, perhaps? He looked pretty good in fall camp in limited media viewings.
• Notre Dame gets a few first downs with passes to Kris Mitchell and Jayden Thomas, but the Irish drive stalls at midfield. Leonard tried to make something happen with his legs on third and long. He missed a chance to throw to Evans, who’s still only going out there on third downs.
• An incredibly bad pass from Conner Weigman ends up in the hands of Adon Shuler for his first career interception. Massive turning point in this game, perhaps. Notre Dame in business at the plus 29.
• Notre Dame does not make good on a pass interference penalty that sets the Irish up with an in-goal situation. Two poor passes from Leonard in a row made the Irish settle for a field goal. Jeter comfortably hit it. It’s tied again.
SCORE: Texas A&M 6, Notre Dame 6 with 8:32 left in the second quarter.
• Howard Cross III makes a big play on third down to get the ball back for the Irish offense. With that, both teams are 1-for-5 on third down now.
• Notre Dame wide receiver Jordan Faison did not walk under his own power to the injury tent after getting tackled awkwardly. Two trainers helped him limp there.
