Series facts: Notre Dame and Louisville are tied 2-2, with the Cardinals winning the most recent matchup 33-20 in Louisville on Oct. 7, 2023.

Head coaches: Louisville — Jeff Brohm (127-79 in 11 years overall; 13-4 in two years at Louisville); Notre Dame — Marcus Freeman (22-9, third season at Notre Dame)

2024 team records: Fighting Irish — 2-1 (W, 23-13 at Texas A&M; L, 16-14 vs. NIU); W, 66-7 at Purdue; W, 28-3 vs. Miami (Ohio)); Cardinals — 3-0 (W, 62-0 vs. Austin Peay; W, 49-14 vs. Jacksonville State; W, 31-19 vs. Georgia Tech)

Noting Notre Dame: Notre Dame is once again in a position in which it needs to beat Louisville to preserve its season. That was the case a year ago, and the Cardinals clipped the Irish 33-20. The Irish were favored in that game, and they’re favored once again in South Bend. Two huge questions remain for Notre Dame, one from each side of the ball. Can quarterback Riley Leonard get it going and be a consistently effective passer? Can the Irish defense show up and stop the run, something it didn’t do against Louisville — or last week against Miami (Ohio), for that matter? If the answers to both are positive Notre Dame has a good chance of winning this weekend.

Noting Louisville: The Cardinals followed up their win over Notre Dame last season with a disappointing 38-21 loss at unranked Pitt before stringing together four ACC wins in a row and qualifying for the ACC Championship Game … They lost their final three games overall in 2023; a regular-season finale rivalry bout versus Kentucky, the conference title game against Florida State and the Holiday Bowl versus USC … Brohm still posted a 10-4 season in his return to his alma mater, a program that had not won double-digit games in a season since 2013 … Louisville started this season with back-to-back offensive outings of more than 500 yards, the first such two-game stretch for the program since 2021, and the Cardinals ranked No. 4 in the FBS in yards per game through Week 3 at 590.5.
